Perry County Literacy Council

Prison Program
The Perry County Literacy Council provides the only adult education GED Program at the Perry County Prison, in New Bloomfield, PA . Prisoners 18 years or older may receive the benefits of our classes held in the county prison several times a week. Working toward achieving the general education diploma, the inmates are required to attend a minimum of 12 hours of instruction in order to be enrolled in the GED study classes. The GED exams are given at the prison site several times a year. We attempt to finish testing before the inmate’s release date, but this is not always possible. These clients may continue their study at the council upon their release.

In addition to the GED classes, one-on-one tutoring is available to improve reading, writing, or math levels, or to work on job skills necessary upon the inmate’s release.

Basic computer literacy courses are being planned with the help of donated equipment.

The prisoners may also contribute to our prison website LISTEN UP in which they share poetry, personal stories and writings. They do not have access to the Internet, but prepare the writings and design their pages.
What can I do to help?
We are always in need of donations to continue to update the prison library with current books, magazines and educational supplies to improve their knowledge base for the GED exams, as well as good reading supplements for passing the time.

Call our office and inquire about tutoring at the prison. You are provided with a safe environment and only matched with students that are truly interested in learning.
