The Adult Basic Reading provides one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing, math, job-related, and beginning technology skills. Students meet with tutors once or twice a week for 1-2 hours in public access buildings. 	Our Family Literacy Program provides activities for Perry County Head Start, Family Center, and Read to Succeed families. Our Head Start workshops include story time, parent education, and activities for the children and parents together. Each child receives a copy of the featured story time book as our gift. 	The Prison Program provides GED individual and small class instruction for adult inmates, and offers as its goal the opportunity to obtain a GED before release. 	The Aphasia Support Group is for people who are suffering from aphasia and speech difficulties as the result of a stroke. The group is being sponsored by the Perry County Literacy Council and meets monthly on Mondays at the Community Education Center, 232 Market St. Newport. 	The initials "GED" stand for General Education Development. Created in 1942 during World War II, it was meant to allow veterans to quickly get credentials that would be equal to a high school diploma so that they could go on to college. It then became available to all adults. The GED Test measures the skills and general knowledge that are acquired in a high school education. The mission of PA WIN is to encourage and support the development and expansion of customized workplace foundation skills instruction in Pennsylvania. 	Working with the providers of early childhood education and day care within Perry County, The Council’s ECE program provides opportunities for staff training, community engagement activities, enhanced educational activities for children, and serves as a liaison between programs of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and our local programs.

	COMPUTER CLASSES
	The world is changing, and employment in our technologically advanced world often requires some computer skills. Parents want to know what their children or grandchildren are doing on computers and how to either assist them, or make them safer. Our Basic and Advanced computer skills courses can give you an edge in the business world or job hunting, helping with kids’ homework, or just allowing you to learn more about how the computer works. Call for information or to be put on a waiting list. Classes are scheduled 2 to 3 times a year.
